PNM Appliance Recycling FAQs

Who is eligible for the PNM Appliance Recycling program?

Residential ratepayers who receive electrical service from PNM may place an order to have their working refrigerators and/or freezers picked up and recycled.

How are landlords able to request appliance recycling?

Landlords of multi-unit housing may be eligible to recycle additional working refrigerators and freezers above the single family home limit. Please call 888-798-5006 or email [email protected] for assistance with multi-unit housing questions.

What appliances are eligible for pick up to be recycled?

Residential ratepayers may recycle up to two (2) working refrigerators or freezers in any combination. Each unit must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet.

What is the rebate for appliances picked up for recycling and when will it be paid?

Residential ratepayers will receive $75 for each working refrigerator and/or freezer which is picked up to recycle by the PNM Appliance Recycling Program. Rebate checks will be delivered within 6 to 8 weeks after the appliance(s) are picked up to be recycled.

Where can the appliance(s) be located when it is picked up?

There are two options for where the unit(s) to be recycled can be located at the time of pickup. If the working unit(s) are inside the home, the units must be accessible by the recycling team and not require any deconstruction.

For an inside the home pickup, all pets must be crated or removed during an in home pickup, even if the pets are friendly. There must be a clear path to the appliance. Elevator access is required if the unit is located above a second floor. Someone over the age of 18 years old must be present to release the appliance.

If the unit is not within the home, it must be on the residential ratepayer’s property. If you do not expect to be present when the unit is picked up, please attach a note to the appliance, releasing it.

What should be done prior to the unit(s) pick up?

The working unit(s) scheduled for pick up should be empty. A clear path to the appliance needs to be available, as the team picking up the unit will use equipment to retrieve the appliance.

Why can’t I request a specific time for pickup?

The pickup routes are optimized to ensure the team has enough time to pick up appliances and safely store them in the truck. Routes may be adjusted based on the units picked up by the team on any given day.

Are there any restrictions on the number of appliances being picked up?

Customers may only recycle two (2) refrigerators or freezers in total in any combination. Landlords of multi-unit housing may be eligible to recycle additional refrigerators and freezers beyond this two-unit limit. Please call (888) 798-5006 or email [email protected] for assistance with multi-unit housing questions.

What is the rebate amount?

Customers will receive $75 for each working refrigerator and freezer they recycle through the PNM Appliance Recycling Program.

What appliances qualify for the program?

Refrigerators and freezers. All units must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet in size to be eligible.

Does the appliance need to be in working condition?

Yes, the purpose of this program is to get older, working units off the energy grid while also helping consumers like you save money on your electric bill. If the appliance is not cooling, it is already off the grid and does not qualify for this program.

Do I have to be home for the appliance to be picked up?

No, if you are not able to be home during the designated pick up window, and the appliance is in an accessible location outside with a note authorizing the PNM Appliance Recycling Program to pick up the unit, we will still pick up the appliance.

Why can’t I request a specific time?

Our routes are optimized after we have scheduled enough appliances to fill the truck, and because of this we cannot accommodate special requests. You do have the option to leave the appliance outside with a signed and dated note authorizing the PNM Appliance Recycling Program to pick up and recycle it if you’re unable to have someone available during the pick up window.

How long will it take me to get my rebate?

Rebate checks will be delivered within 6-8 weeks after your appliance is picked up.
